Beautiful block-paved patio terraces can make a wonderful difference to a Suffolk property - but as block paving specialists Suffolk, our work paving a beer garden in the village of Ufford has to go down as one of Booth Tarmacadam’s ‘crownin(n)’ glories!
Max and Polly, landlords at the popular East Suffolk pub and eaterie, the Ufford Crown near Woodbridge, got in touch about their beer garden when considering how soon they could start trading again once lockdown restrictions started to ease. Without a very big paved area outside to serve drinks and food, opening up in April was not going to be possible – ideally they wanted a smart hardstanding for an open marquee installation now, which could be an inviting al fresco dining space in the future.
The new patio was to take the place of a grassed area, but complement a lower grassy terrace and play area which was to be retained as it always proved a hit with families.
Block paving was the surfacing solution of choice as clearly the surfacing needed to be able to take the ‘point-loads’ through the feet of the marquee. Block paving is also highly durable and can be laid on inclines if necessary. What’s more, it comes in a range of colour tones and laid and sealed professionally by surfacing specialists Booths, it can be virtually maintenance-free.

Digging out the grass was a significant undertaking as the first part of the job, but the Booth Tarmacadam team soon cracked on with this and breaking up the existing slabbed terrace behind the main part of the pub.
Accessed through a narrow side gate, care had to be taken to get the grab lorries in to clear away the spoil as membrane was put in place and hard core laid. All the clearance, groundworks and sub-base work had to respect the fact that the lower grassy terrace - where existing bench tables and play equipment were located - needed to be retained and left totally unimpacted by the groundworks.
The area was then be paved with brindle block paving to achieve a warm terracotta look in keeping with the period nature of the property. This was in turn edged with black paves (smart stuff Ricky!) and finished off with a chipping area alongside the close-boarded black fencing to make a really neat job.
This raised area of black stone chips above the grassy lower terrace must be an ideal spot to contrast with colourfully planted pots for the summer.

Polly and Max were extremely grateful to Booth’s Suffolk block-paving and groundworks team for the transformation which provided an outdoor all-weather surface, so they could welcome back thirsty customers on 14th April 2021.
It wasn’t long before a framed marquee was in place to provide outdoor shelter for spring customers, with some smart planters and wooden tables and chairs positioned around outside, making the most of the extra paved space above the grassed area.
